About The Vancouver Opera Guild
The Vancouver Opera Guild began in 1960 as an adjunct to the Vancouver Opera Association. In 1979, it was incorporated as a separate organization under the British Columbia Societies Act. Since that time we have maintained a proud tradition of promoting and supporting opera in British Columbia. The Guild plans projects to benefit Vancouver Opera productions and to help young talent establish their careers. We organize social events and coordinate tours to well-known opera houses around the world.
The Vancouver Opera Guild initiated the concept of taking opera into the schools. We started with slide shows and short lectures and then developed mini-operas, performed in schools throughout the Lower Mainland and eventually the province.
The Guild gives a substantial Career Development Grant each spring to a Canadian artist involved with opera or preparing for a career in opera.
These, as well as other educational projects, are funded with income generated by the Guild’s activities. However, our major beneficiary continues to be the Vancouver Opera Association.
Over the years, the Guild has been recognized by the City of Vancouver and by Opera Volunteers International for its volunteer services and for its contribution to opera in Vancouver. The list of awards can be viewed at “Award Recognitions”.
